Description

DSO:

M51 was discovered by Irish astronomer William Parsons and French astronomer Messier. Messier 51 is a two arm spiral located at a distance of 23 MM l-y. The whirlpool is 85,000 l-y across and slightly smaller than the 'milky way'. NGC 5195 is another galaxy located at the tip of M51 that is slightly behind M51 given the impression of a gravitational 'collision'.
